Abstract
Globally, coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix) is the most devastating disease affecting this crop, capable of reducing production by up to 50%. Given this situation, control using mycoparasitic fungi emerges as a sustainable management alternative that is compatible with both the environment and human health. This study evaluated the field biological efficacy of the strains Akanthomyces uredinophilum (CHE-CNRCB 616, 988), Simplicillium lanosoniveum (CHE-CNRCB 373, 544), and Trichoderma longibrachiatum (CHE-CNRCB 398), comparing them against a commercial biological control (PHC T-22®; Trichoderma harzianum), a chemical control (Folicur®; a.i. tebuconazole), and an untreated absolute control. The study was conducted on five-year-old coffee trees (Caturra variety) affected by rust, using a concentration of 1 × 10⁶ conidia/mL in a completely randomized experimental design. A re-inoculation with the evaluated strains was performed 35 days after the initial application. Treatments with A. uredinophilum, S. lanosoniveum, and T. longibrachiatum achieved biological efficacy rates of 88.1%, 88.9%, and 87.3%, respectively, outperforming the commercial reference products by up to 24.6%. In comparison, PHC T-22® showed a biological efficacy of 71.6%, while Folicur® reached 64.3%. Regarding disease severity, S. lanosoniveum demonstrated the best performance, reducing severity to 0.92% a value significantly lower than that observed in the absolute control, which recorded a severity of 3.8%. Overall, these results demonstrate that strains of A. uredinophilum, S. lanosoniveum, and T. longibrachiatum possess high potential as biological control agents against H. vastatrix, representing an effective and sustainable alternative for coffee leaf rust management and a promising option for reducing reliance on chemical fungicides.
